Sub-Saharan Africa Network (SUSAN) of the International Biometric Society (IBS) Conference
University Of Botswana, 4775 Notwane Road, Gaborone, Botswana, 27 June - 1 July 2011
THEME: GLOBAL TRENDS IN QUALITY OF LIFE THROUGH BIOMETRY
Background
SUSAN is a network of IBS national groups within the Sub-Saharan Africa region. The network’s main aim is to enhance capacity in biometry in the region. This includes applications in agriculture, medical and health research, infectious diseases, environment and ecology, climate, and other applied sciences such as the new dynamic area of statistical genetics and bioinformatics. The network’s biennial workshops/conferences create a forum for researchers and statisticians in the region to meet and share their research findings, create new collaboration opportunities across the region, and discuss ways of how to further improve the application of Statistics and Mathematics in solving real life problems affecting the continent of the Africa. Since its inception the network has continued to hold very successful biennial meetings attracting not only its regional memberships but also international participants from other IBS regions and networks.
The theme for SUSAN 2011 to be held at the University of Botswana, Gaborone namely “Global Trends in Quality of Life through Biometry” emphasizes the importance of Biometry in solving real life problems affecting humanity in the 21st century and beyond. It is increasingly becoming clear that both qualitative and quantitative analyses and processing of information are necessary to arrive at evidence-based decisions crucial in addressing challenges of poverty, food security and production, disease and health, climate change and others. The sub-themes of the conference are stated below.
SUB-THEME:
- Health, Diseases and Biostatistics: Clinical Trials, Mental health, health economics, infectious disease modeling, Bioassay and Micro Array
- Agriculture: Applied biometry, animal/plant breeding, soils, plant diseases, seeds, farming approaches under various climatic changes
- Education/Teaching: Teaching of Biometry; Computer applications and programmes in teaching Biometry
- Forestry and fishing: Biotic and abiotic modeling and analysis
- Climate Change and Environment: Environmental, Climate and Weather, waste management, water and pollution, Modeling
- Composite Topics: Survey sampling Methodology, Mathematical modelling, probability models; gender in Biometry, risk analysis, Biometry and official statistics, Industrial Statistics.
Pre-Conference Workshops.
There shall be preference workshops, whose themes, topics and facilitators will be announced once the necessary information is finalized.
